WEEKLY UPDATE
A mix bag of hockey with four regular season games and two playoff games. Congrats to Thunder that finished top seed on the B side. Our two A playoff games were nail bitters and came down to the wire!
RECAPS
Thunder vs. Ravens- The first period of our first game of the day was back and forth. TD scored first each time until RV took their first lead of the game 4-3 just before the buzzer. TD battled back in the first half of the second period to put the score at 6-4. RV never gave up and one by one, got themselves back in the game. A back door power play goal for RV tied the game at 6 a piece. The go-ahead goal scored by RV’s Shain Raichura followed shortly after. TD only pulled their goalie with thirty seconds left and could not get the equalizer. RV held on for the 7-6 win. TD- Micheal Mirdamadi- 39 shots / RV- Andrew Teed- 31 shots
GeeGees vs. Ravens- RV were playing back-to-back with still a short bench and had a good start with a 2-0 lead. GG cut the deficit in half midway through the period. After a few more goals were exchanged, the score was 4-2 for RV despite being outshot 22-17. The score remained close until five minutes into the second when RV went on a run. Shain Raichura had hot hands as he scored a total of five in the game, including three back-to-back in the second. RV squeezed in the last goal to put the final at 9-4 for RV. GG- Felix Boucher- 39 shots / RV-Andrew Teed- 39 shots
Thunder vs. Coyotes- CT made it a quick start as they scored less than two minutes into the game. CT eventually tied the game and pushed ahead by two. With just over five to go in the first, CT got within one off a rebound goal. Score was 3-2 for TD at the buzzer as they outshot CT 23-11. Off the opening faceoff of the second, CT evened the score with a backwall rebound. TD cranked the heat even higher with more shots on net and scored the next two to put the score at 5-3. Nick Syrenne was definitely the second MVP for CT as he got his team back within one with a goal in front of the net. TD never let up and finished the game with the last two, including an empty netter, for the 6-4 victory. TD- Micheal Mirdamadi- 19 shots / CT- Bilal Hussain Syed- 57 shots
GeeGees vs. Coyotes- It was quiet in the scoring department in our third game of the day and not from a lack of chances. Mr Syed was busy again as GG put 26 shots on him in the first half and only scored one. The score was 1-0 at the first buzzer. A few minutes into the third, GG pushed ahead by two off a 2 on 1 play. CT killed off a 4-minute PK to stay down by two. Unfortunately, they could not crack the shut out and GG pulled out the 2-0 win. GG- Felix Boucher- 22 shots / CT- Bilal Hussain Syed- 50 shots
A2 - Leitrim Hawks (5) vs. Rag Tag Bunch (4) - This matchup was game 1 of a best of three series between LH and RTB. RTB took a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes and that included a powerplay goal. LH cut the lead in half, but RTB captain Ryan Grenon scored his second of the game to take back the two-goal cushion. The Cefaloni brothers went to work to score the next two and tie the game at 3 a piece. RTB stole the lead back before the end of the first. They continued that momentum to start the second and kept a two-goal lead most of the game. Things were looking good when they went up 7-4 with just under eight minutes to go. LH came out hard and scored two quick ones to get within one. With two minutes left, LH took a penalty and instead of it costing them, they scored shorthanded and forced overtime. LH killed off the four seconds remaining of the PK and scored a one timer on the back door goal for the game winner. A fun comeback victory to watch with the final 8-7 LH. LH- Carl Radford- 33 shots / RTB- David Sade- 41 shots
A1 – Redline (3) vs. Soft Dumps (2) - Our finale of the afternoon was the playoff game that determined who would face Ottawa Cannons in the A final. SD came out swinging and caught RL off guard as they had a big lead in the first half, which included four goals from Graeme Rogers. RL were only able to get one by tender Jordy Kokkinakis as he made some big saves which helped give his team a 6-1 lead after the first twenty minutes. Shots at half were even at fifteen. A rebound goal for SD opened the second period which extended their lead even further. RL refused togive up and almost doubled their shots on net. Three goals in eight minutes put the score at 7-4. The scoring for SD slowed down as they maybe tried to play more defensive to hold their lead.
They scored their 8 th goal with just under four minutes left and it looked like they had this game in the bag. Two RL snipes made it 8-7 and in the last two minutes, a PP allowed Matt Code to complete the hat trick and get within one. RL gave it their all but could not score the equalizer to force the extra time. SD held on for the 8-7 win and the second seat in the finals. RL- Behrooz Amoli- 29 shots / SD- Jordy Kokkinakis- 43 shots
